Batman Begins was the movie that made Nolan a household name.It was one of the biggest hits of 2005 and has since then redefined superhero movies.
Batman Begins,just like his previous movies is a crime-thriller movie.But making a movie about a superhero who has no actual super powers was certainly a difficult task.Unlike any of the previous films of the Batman franchise,Begins explores Bruce Wayne's (Christian Bale) back-story,and why and how he became the masked crusader.The viewers are shown the ideologies Bruce takes up in order to become Batman.
The dialogues of this movie are just one of a kind.Almost every line is perfect and hard hitting and at times witty too.
The main theme of this movie is FEAR.The movie shows how fear can change people,for the good or for the bad.
Another main topic followed in this movie is the "right/wrong judgement"...As i previously said in my Insomnia review,it seems that Nolan wanted to further establish this theme into a character,and that character is Batman.
The music by Zimmer and Howard was another major plus point.The music itself made the movie have a dark atmosphere.
Another first for Nolan ,was the big cast...Christian Bale as Batman is perfect for the role,since he is well known to portray the dark and brooding characters. The supporting cast too were excellent.Gary Oldman as Gordon and Micheal Caine as Alfred were just amazing.Liam Neeson as Ras Al Ghul was also great but as a villain the character wasn't as sinister compared to Nolan's usual villains.
Nolan's trademarks such as ,the flawed hero, and multiple timelines are present.
The challenge Batman begins faced upon its release in 2005 was huge.It rebooted the Batman franchise and it was the first Batman movie after almost 8 years.The previous Batman movie- Batman & Robin (1997) is still regarded as one of the worst movies of all time and had put an end to future Batman movies.
Also both Christian Bale and Nolan were not superstars back in 2005 since both worked more in artistic movies than in commercial ones.
But upon release the movie was a big success both critically and also commercially.Nolan's approach to a superhero movie was widely appreciated.A realistic setting ,very less use of CGI and a dark&serious storyline.
Batman Begins had redefined superhero movies.It encouraged others to reboot many other series such as the James Bond series ,X-Men,Sherlock Holmes,Planet of the Apes ,Star Trek etc
