Batman (1989)

[great start to the Batman series]

Batman (1989)
IMDB- 6.5
Rottentomatoes- 71
RJG Rating- 75

When a psychotic gangster named Joker attacks the city of Gotham ,a masked vigilante named Batman goes after him.

Starring- Michael Keaton, Jack Nicholson ,Kim Basinger
Director- Tim Burton

Tim Burton's 1989 Batman was the first movie (other than the Adam West TV movie -Batman) based on Bob Kane's superhero.

Micheal Keaton donned the suit of Batman amid great controversy. When the project was first announced with Tim Burton cast as director and Micheal Keaton (a comedian) as Batman ,many expected the movie to follow in the lines of the cheesy Batman TV series of the 60's.But this was not to be.
Keaton delivered a solid performance as Bruce Wayne and his alter ego ,Batman ,though his presence in the movie can be easily mistaken for a supporting role.Jack Nicholson's Joker is given a major portion of the movie. As Joker ,Jack has done a great work.Kim Basinger as Vicky has a sizable portion of the movie ,but overall she doesnt offer much ,acting wise.Keaton well played both Bruce & Batman but with such a limited role he couldnt shine much.

The story was a welcome change. The story was dark and didnt stoop down to the levels of the old Batman TV series. But the major flaw is that in a movie based on the superhero ,the villain gets the major part.Nothing much is said about Batman ,while a long backstory of Joker is told. Also the addition of cliched twists, stain the main legend of Batman (ex:Parents death scene).

Tim Burton delivered an excellent movie. His style of movie making can be seen all over the movie. But it is here where he makes another flaw.It isnt timeless, its made for the 1990's era. While enough care has been given to the movie it just isnt enough.

Danny Elfman's music is haunting and perfect but the music isnt used very properly in the movie.

Overall Batman is a great start to the series but it goes lacking in some areas.
