Twilight ,Skyfall & Lincoln crush new releases

1-Twilight Breaking Dawn part 2 ,had another steep decline ,but still managed to edge Skyfall to retain the #1 spot for the 3rd week in a row.The finale collected $17.4million to bring its domestic total to $254million.The movie has made $702million worldwide and is expected to become the highest grossing Twilight movie by next week (Breaking Dawn Part 1- $712million)

2-Skyfall had another great week collecting $17million.Skyfall is now the top grossing James Bond of all time in both domestic as well as worldwide.Domestically the movie has made $246million and is still going very strong.Worldwide the movie stands at $869million and might break into the Billion Dollar Club.

3-Lincoln is doing very well for a biopic. The Steven Speilberg movie made $13.5million in its 3rd week. The biopic has grossed $83million domestically.

4-Rise of The guardians had another disappointing week and managed to collect just $13.5million.The movie has made $105million worldwide.

5-Life Of Pi made $12million to bring its domestic total to $48.3million.Even though the movie is doing slow business in USA ,its expectation lies in the overseas market.Life of Pi has already earned $60million overseas and is still going strong.

Where are the new releases?Brad Pitt's Killing Them Softly flopped ,making just $7million debuted at #7.The movie is about an assassin hired to kill 3robbers.Critics have been divided on the movie. While majority praise the cast ,many were irritated with the loud political tones of the movie. Its rated at 78%.

The Collection ,made just $3.4million and debuted at #10.its rated at 44%.The horror movie which is about a sadistic killer is the sequel to the 2009 movie ,The Collector.Critics have said the movie will be more enjoyable for those who liked the first part.

This week theres no interesting movies for release since all movies are staying clear of The Hobbit ,which is scheduled for the 14th.
The only new release is Playing for Keeps ,which is poorly marketed although it features some A-list stars.Gerard Butler ,Catherine Zeta,Uma Thurman,Jessica Biel star in this romantic movie which centers around football.

So we can expect a similar list next week !

Talaash halts JTHJ & SOS

Talaash [to be a Hit]

Aamir Khan's latest movie ,Talaash opened to above average reviews and a great box office opening. The movie made Rs.48cr in its 3day run.The movie is a cop thriller and reviews says that even though its a good suspense movie ,the second half and the climax was not upto the mark.

[Watch It]

Jab Tak Hai Jaan

JTHJ suffered a steep decline in its collection and only managed to rake in Rs.2cr in its 3rd week. With Talaash's release ,JTHJ suffered a huge blow. With Khiladi786 's release next week ,these might be JTHJ last weeks. The SRK-Yash Chopra movie has made Rs.119cr and as of now is the 5th highest domestic grossing movie of 2012.

Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted (2012)

[a colourful and hilarious addition to the series]

Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted (2012)
IMDB- 7.0
RottenTomatoes- 78%
RJG Rating- 90

The 4 runaways make another grand plan to get back to NewYork.

Starring- Ben Stiller ,Chris Rock ,David Schwimmer,Jada Pinkett
Director- Eric Darnell

The animation was surprisingly awesome. The entire movie was colourful from start to finish. The action sequences and the circus scenes were brilliantly animated. The wide range of characters were a delight and the voice cast were perfect.

While not much can be expected from a movie like Madagascar ,the third was enjoyable. The story isnt meant to be taken seriously ,and it takes this fact to great lengths. Thus it manages to extract humour from the most outlandish gags and tricks and still manages to make kids as well as adults entertained. The story might follow a predictable route but at most times it does its best to stay away from most cliches.

Direction was crisp and fast paced. The pacing of the movie was fast ,though it lagged a bit in between.Madagascar 3 turned out better than the previous 2 movies in all departments.

The comedy was great and fortunately it wasnt filled with adult humour like some animated movies this year.

Overall ,Madagascar 3 is a must watch animated movie of 2012.

Barfi! (2012)

[a sweet first half and a sour second half]

Barfi! (2012)
IMDB- 8.6
RJG Rating- 50

A love story of a deaf & mute man nick named Barfi.

Starring- Ranbir Kapoor,Priyanka Chopra,Ileana
Director- Anurag Basu

In the acting department ,Barfi is solid.Ranbir as the lead character, Barfi, gives a wonderful performance. His role powers the movie along.Ileana gives a sweet role too.But the person who matches up with Ranbir's antics onscreen is Priyanka, as the autistic Jhilmil. She gives a delightful performance.

In the story area ,Barfi brings something new to Indian movies. The first half is filled with charming stories and events. Its a bit mixed up but the movie unfolds nicely.Barfi ,powered by Ranbir, does its best to stay away from most cliches. But all efforts crash with the start of the second half. The story goes for a cheesy ride and makes way for all the usual Bollywood twists. On top of that ,the story becomes a bit confusing as the director fails to juggle the non-linear plot.Although its sorted out later ,it was a misfired experimentation to make the story seem more unique.

But the biggest flaw in the story can be spotted by true movie addicts. Many of the charming scenes and sequences have been ripped off directly from many Hollywood silent comedy classics. Now that i think of it ,Barfi is nothing but a huge compilation of Chaplin,Keaton etc work, mixed with a poor romantic story.

Direction by Anurag was excellent. But the fact that almost 60% of the movie is direct rips from Hollywoods silent classics diminishes Barfi's quality.Although he has managed to bring something new to Bollywood ,he could have atleast made some of the comedy scenes by himself rather than copying everything scene for scene. The first half was light hearted and charming, but as i previously mentioned his attempts falter in the second half.He throws out the entire comedy out the window ,and brings in too much melodrama in the second.

While the comedy was presented nicely ,the romance was undeveloped.Barfi's (Ranbir) chemistry with Meera(Illiyana) was perfect but how he suddenly develops deep relations with Jhilmil (Priyanka) was not explained much.
The music was beautiful and really uplifted the movie from start to finish.Cinematography was just excellent and really blends the beauty of the locations into the movie.

Overall ,Barfi is a good watch for the acting performances and for a change from the usual dump of hindi movies. But do not expect much from the story.

Iron Man 3 Pics

Skyfall FYC AD

Definitely the best Bond movie of all time ,Skyfall was a blast. But does it have a chance at the Oscars?Due to some strong competitions this year ,Skyfall wont feature in the major nor in the technical categories. There are some chances of Javier & Judi getting nominations in the Supporting Actor/Actress category.Sound nominations are a possibility.

My review
Skyfall (2012) [99] http://bit.ly/skyfal007RJG

Movies Considered for Best Visuals Oscar

The 10 movies that are being considered are:
The Dark Knight Rises
The Avengers
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey
The Amazing Spider-Man
Cloud Atlas
John Carter
Life Of Pi
Prometheus
Snow White and the Huntsman
Skyfall

The members of the Academy will view 10min excerpts from each movie.5 nominees will be selected and they will be announced on Jan10.
The winners will be announced on Oscar night -Feb 24

This years nominees is the tightest competition in recent memory. My Picks are:

TDKR ,Hobbit ,Life Of Pi, Avengers ,Prometheus

Hobbit is guaranteed to make it to the Top 5.The visual effects utilised in the movie is top class and WETA (the vfx company) has previously won 5 Oscars.3 back to back awards for the LOTR trilogy ,and for King Kong and Avatar.

TDKR is another strong contender.Nolan might not use much of CGI ,but he definitely knows how to use them appropriately to maximize its quality. And being one of the major hits of 2012 & the end of TDK trilogy ,TDKR has good chances to make a good impact on the technical nominations.

Avengers is another guaranteed nominee. The movie was filled with visual effects from start to finish ,but they might have just overdone it.

Life Of Pi could make it on a 30%chance.The movie has been critically lauded but it might not win any major awards due to the tight competition. So theres a good chance ,the Academy will hand out a nomination for the visual effects to Pi.

Prometheus,Spider-Man,Cloud Atlas,John Carter tie for the final place. But Prometheus will be my final pick .The entire alien world was brilliantly created and the visuals were just beautiful in it.I loved the visuals of Spiderman ,Atlas & Carter as well ,but as i said ,its a Very tight competition.

What are your picks?

Ice Age: Continental Drift (2012)

[satisfying addition to the series]

Ice Age: Continental Drift (2012)
IMDB- 6.7
RottenTomatoes- 38
RJG Rating- 50

Manny,Diego &Sid are separated from the group and a meet a group of Pirates.

Starring- Ray Romano, John Leguizamo, Denis Leary
Director- Steve Martino and Mike Thurmeier

Animation of Ice Age 4 is great. Its not brilliant but its follows the standards set by the previous Ice Age movies.Just like the previous movies ,this one too sets up the story in a large environment ,but on the downside this wasnt as colourful as the previous ones.Much of the story takes place on the icy oceans.Characters were nicely drawn too.

The Ice Age series has never boasted of any great story telling. The story is for the kids and the humour is mostly adult orientated. In continental drift ,we have the usual recipe ,daughter and dad have a fight, one of them gets separated and both learn a lesson. And this is littered with enough cliches that its predictable from start to finish.

Direction is generally good.In a story that doesnt offer much surprises ,he does his best to inject some freshness into the movie. The action scenes are ok.The comedy is a bit 'adult' for a kids movie.

Overall ,those who liked the previous Ice Age movies will enjoy this one too.For others ,this movie is more for kids than for adults.

Animation- 3.5/5

How I Met your Mother S8 E5-E8

How I Met your Mother [8x05] The Autumn of Breakups
TV.com- 7.7
RJG Rating- 5

Ted starts to run into trouble with Victoria.

The show has completely lost its grace.Though it was obvious from Season 2 that Victoria wasnt Ted's mother and a breakup was inevitable ,Season 8 stretches the plot and uses the most tiresome 'breakup excuse' - choose Robin or Me.Even though Marshall's role was strange in this episode ,his acting made it tolerable. For a change ,Barney's story was interesting.

How I Met your Mother [8xo6] Splitsville
TV.com- 8.2
RJG Rating- 6

Robin tries to break up with Nick

Another totally unrelated episode to the 'mother'.The problem of this entire episode is the fact that we know whats going to happen (Robin & Barney relation) and the writers are stretching this fact too much.Add to the fact theres nothing new at all ,and this is a highly predictable episode. The only relief from this episode other than Barney's irritating behavior was the Marshall-Ted story. So far the show is giving less priority to comedy.

How I Met your Mother [8xo7] The Stamp Tramp
TV.com- 7.9
RJG Rating- 8

Barney finds it hard to choose a new stripclub.

Atlast a good episode from the show. The highlight being the Marshall story.Barney& Robin's story was also good.Plus it sets a great stage for the upcoming episode based on Marshall's big day.Guest star ,Joe Manganiello as Marshall's friend Brad did a good job.Once again nothing about the mother.

How I Met your Mother [8xo8] Twelve Horny Women
TV.com- 8.2
RJG Rating- 8.5

Marshall faces one of his biggest cases.

Surely one of the best episodes of this season so far.Marshall was definitely the highlight of the episode once again.Joe Manganiello as Marshall's friend Brad ,once again gives a good performance. The groups flashbacks were interesting too.The comedy was present but it wasnt as great as the initial seasons.Plus the last 3 min of Barney & Robin was very exhausting to watch. We know they get back together soon ,but yet instead of getting to the point ,the writers ONCE AGAIN decides to stretch the inevitable.Once again absolutely nothing about the mother.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days (2012)

[just for fans of the series]

Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days (2012)
IMDB- 6.0
Rottentomatoes- 51%
RJG Rating- 35

Greg gets extremely bored in the summer with only his video games to his rescue.

Starring- Zachary Gordon,Steve Zahn,Devon Bostick
Director- David Bowers

The third part of the Wimpy Kid movie series is based on the novels The Last Straw and Dog Days by Jeff Kinney.

The entire cast from the second movie are back for this part as well.Zachary ,who plays the main lead ,gives an ok performance.Steve Zahn as the father has a more bigger role this time. The supporting cast do a good job as well.Devon Bostick as Greg's older brother Roddick ,gives a good performance once again.

The story for Dog Days ,is somewhat familiar to the second part ,Roddick Rules.Theres no new concept or anything.Just the same humiliating and awkward jokes.

Direction of Dog Days is average. Its tone is the same as the previous two and doesnt try to improve itself. Its pacing is quite even and is an enjoyable watch.
Overall,if you liked the previous 2 installments ,Dog Days will be of your liking.

Acting- 3/5
Story- 2.5/5

The Watch (2012)

[a good concept wasted on poor jokes]

The Watch (2012)
IMDB- 5.7
Rottentomatoes- 17%
RJG Rating- 35

A shop owner creates a 'Neighbourhood Watch' team ,after one of his employees is brutally murdered.

Starring- Ben Stiller,Jonah Hill,Vince Vaughn,Richard Ayoadae
Director- Akiva Schaffer

The Watch has a solid cast ,but all are wasted.Ben Stiller,Jonah Hill and Richard A give a good performance ,but Vince Vaughn is average. They cant be fully blamed for the movies failure ,since they dont have much to work on.

The story for Watch has a good concept but its weighed down by the amount of vulgar and lame jokes.Very few actually hit the mark .The story is dark and could have been a complete horror movie but lining it with gags and jokes makes even the horror parts dull. The characters are poorly made and void of any development.

Direction is generally poor. The pacing is uneven and tends to lag towards the end.

Overall ,Watch is a one time watch for the fans of Ben Stiller ,Jonah Hill ,otherwise its a miss.

Acting - 2.5/5

Direction- 1.5/5
