Argo (2012)

[an intense hostage thriller]

Argo (2012)
IMDB- 8.1 (Top 250- #213)
Rottentomatoes- 96%
RJG Rating- 90

6 American Embassy workers are hunted during the Iranian revolution.

Starring- Ben Affleck ,Bryan Cranston
Director- Ben Affleck

Ben Affleck once again directs and plays the lead after 2010's The Town. From start to end ,he plays an excellent role and gives the movie a strong character. The supporting actors playing the hostages were all okay.Although they are the lead subjects ,its hard not to end up hating a couple of them. Its a bit one dimensional characters.John Goodman & Alan Arkin on the other hand give a great supporting roles ,but there roles are too short.Bryan Cranston did a good job and also had enough screen time as well.

The story is based on the "Canadian Caper" ,a true incident which took place during the Iranian Revolution.Although much is changed to give dramatic effect ,the story is tight and plays out really well.Even though the climax is sort of cliched ,Ben's direction gets the movie across.

Ben Affleck once again has made an excellent movie.Although it has its moments of comedy ,its mostly a very intense movie. The pacing is mixed in the first half with drama suddenly giving way for a comparatively slow and relaxed period with ,but the second half spikes up the intensity all the way to the end.Affleck directs a somewhat cliched story into an engrossing watch. With Argo ,he has proved hes a great director.

Overall ,Argo is a must watch.Although its not historically accurate ,its an interesting watch to understand the situations during the Iranian revolution period.

Acting- 3.5/5
Story- 4/5
Direction -4.5/5
Thriller- 5/5
Drama- 4/5

Oscar Nominations- 7

Best Supporting Actor- Alan Arkin
Best Adapted Screenplay

Best Sound Editing
Best Sound Mixing
Best Original Score- Alexandre Desplat

FYC Ads

Anna Karenina
Theres not much hope of this movie making it into the Top 10 ,but theres a good chance of Keira Knightley getting a nomination for Best Actress.

Brave #2
Unlike Up & Toy Story 3 ,Brave isnt worthy to get a Best Picture nomination.

TDKR #4
Theres a slight possibility TDKR might edge itself into the Top 10 Best Picture nominees but winning it is quite impossible.
The Nolan Bros deserve a nomination for the Adapted Screenplay.

TDKR #5
The cast of the Dark Knight Trilogy are solid and have given amazing performances.Christian will miss out on Best Actor ,Anne is set for Best Actress for Les Miserables .Gary Oldman ,Micheal Caine & Morgan have been ignored from the days of Batman Begins.Tom Hardy has less than 10%chance to make it through.

Hobbit
Hobbit is a lock for technical awards ,but for the major categories?Based on initial reviews ,Hobbit will make it through for Adapted Screenplay if the competition is light.

Hotel Transylvania
One of the big animated hits of 2012 ,Hotel T has a good chance to be one of the 5 animated movie nominees.

Madagascar 3
Its a great movie and might get a nomination ,but winning it is quite difficult.

Moonrise Kingdom
Wes Anderson is a brilliant director and His latest movie has racked up universal praise. Its a guarantee for a Best Picture nomination.

ParaNorman
Easily the best animated movie of 2012,ParaNorman should not only get nominated but also win it.ParaNorman has the edge over the other animated movies ,but its main competition will be Frankenweenie.

This is 40
The movie is yet to be released ,but by initial promos ,it looks like a classic Apatow movie. And Apatow movies dont make it into Oscars however good they might be.If This is 40 turns out to be great ,it might get the Best COmedy/Musical at the Golden Globes, but the Academy wont consider comedies.

Skyfall FYC AD

Definitely the best Bond movie of all time ,Skyfall was a blast. But does it have a chance at the Oscars?Due to some strong competitions this year ,Skyfall wont feature in the major nor in the technical categories. There are some chances of Javier & Judi getting nominations in the Supporting Actor/Actress category.Sound nominations are a possibility.

My review
Skyfall (2012) [99] http://bit.ly/skyfal007RJG

Movies Considered for Best Visuals Oscar

The 10 movies that are being considered are:
The Dark Knight Rises
The Avengers
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey
The Amazing Spider-Man
Cloud Atlas
John Carter
Life Of Pi
Prometheus
Snow White and the Huntsman
Skyfall

The members of the Academy will view 10min excerpts from each movie.5 nominees will be selected and they will be announced on Jan10.
The winners will be announced on Oscar night -Feb 24

This years nominees is the tightest competition in recent memory. My Picks are:

TDKR ,Hobbit ,Life Of Pi, Avengers ,Prometheus

Hobbit is guaranteed to make it to the Top 5.The visual effects utilised in the movie is top class and WETA (the vfx company) has previously won 5 Oscars.3 back to back awards for the LOTR trilogy ,and for King Kong and Avatar.

TDKR is another strong contender.Nolan might not use much of CGI ,but he definitely knows how to use them appropriately to maximize its quality. And being one of the major hits of 2012 & the end of TDK trilogy ,TDKR has good chances to make a good impact on the technical nominations.

Avengers is another guaranteed nominee. The movie was filled with visual effects from start to finish ,but they might have just overdone it.

Life Of Pi could make it on a 30%chance.The movie has been critically lauded but it might not win any major awards due to the tight competition. So theres a good chance ,the Academy will hand out a nomination for the visual effects to Pi.

Prometheus,Spider-Man,Cloud Atlas,John Carter tie for the final place. But Prometheus will be my final pick .The entire alien world was brilliantly created and the visuals were just beautiful in it.I loved the visuals of Spiderman ,Atlas & Carter as well ,but as i said ,its a Very tight competition.

What are your picks?

TDKR,Life Of Pi FYC Ads

TDKR #3
the 3rd fyc ad for TDKR is a brilliant shot of the bat logo burning on the bridge.
TDKR has a 60% chance of getting nominated in the Best Picture.Last time when The Dark Knight was snubbed from the Best Picture category ,the Academy faced universal criticism.Snubbing TDK resulted into expanding the Best Picture nominees from 5 to 10 the very next year. Will the Academy repeat its mistake?

Life of Pi
Life of Pi is almost 80% guaranteed to make it into the Best Picture category.

A tribute to the films and people who werent even nominated for this years Oscars..

Oscar Snubs 2012

The snubbing of Ryan G(Drive),Leonardo(J.Edgar) & Micheal F(Shame) were the biggest insults of this year...
While,Senna & Tintin were guaranteed winners in their respective categories (Documentary & Animation),had they been nominated...
Drive's exclusion from the top awards just showed the Oscars arent the crowning glory of awards anymore...
