Croods & Olympus rules the Box Office

#1- Croods ,the first big animated movie of 2013 (ignoring Escape from Planet Earth) ,made an excellent start with $44million.Voiced by a strong cast including Nicolas Cage ,Emma Stone and Ryan Reynolds ,The Croods was accepted by the large family crowd.Directed by Chris Sanders ,who earlier directed the blockbuster How to Train Your Dragon ,Croods is about a caveman and his family as they set upon a road trip.

The reviews have been slightly above average.Rated at 64% ,critics say that although the animation and story will keep the kids and family entertained ,the movie itself doesnt rise up to any standards.

Croods is a big hit overseas as well and so far made $107million worldwide from a budget of $135million.

#2-Action flick ,Olympus Has Fallen made $30million ,surviving the jinx that seemed to be holding down all the action movies this year (Other than Die Hard 5's 24million opening ,all other movies flopped ,scoring less than 10million). Starring a powerful set of actors such as Morgan Freeman ,Gerard Butler & Aaron Eckhart ,the movie is about a terrorist takeover of the White House.

Reviews have been mixed though.Rated at 51% , critics say that while the story is cliched and predictable ,the direction and Gerard's acting is worth the ticket.

#3-Oz gave up its 2 week reign ,falling to #3 with $22million.The visual effects laden movie has made $356million worldwide and has already set rumours for a sequel with the original cast.

#4-The Call fell sharply as it made $8.7million.Halle Berry's thriller has so far made $30million.Its not expected to go past the $50million mark.

#5-The third new release Admission had a poor start ,making just $6.4million.With a budget of $13million ,Admission will reclaim its budget but will have to make a strong hold if it wants to make a decent total.The movie didnt manage to impress the critics either.Rated at 44% ,the general consensus is that while Tina & Paul are excellent ,the story is a disappointment.

Another new release which has been released in limited theaters was Spring Breakers.Starring former child artists such as Selena Gomez and Vanessa Hudgens the movie made a good collection of $5million.For a movie that was made at a budget of $2million ,this is quite a strong collection ,especially from such a limited number of screens.Reviews have been positive ,and rated at 70% ,critics say that James Franco is brilliant and the social topics picked by the movie is highly relevant.

This week we have 2 polar opposites.One is a hardcore boys movie and on the other we have a movie based on Twilight author Stephenie Meyer's hit novel.

But my pick will be.....

1- GI JOE Retaliation.The sequel to 2009's GI Joe ,this one brings back some of the original cast and adds a major crowd pleaser, Dwayne Rock.Rock is on a golden run with every movie franchise he touches turning to gold.So theres some hope on this GI Joe.The movie is directed by Jon Chu who earlier directed Step Up 2 & 3.

2-The Host doesnt look too good.Its only hope is its legion of fans mainly made up of Twilight crazies.The movie is about a force that take over the human bodies,kind of like an alien takeover.If you are a guy ,stay away from this one!

3-The third release is a waste movie made by one of the worst directors ,Tyler Perry.The movie is called -Tyler Perry's Temptation:Confessions of a Marriage Counselor.Please skip this at all costs!

Sequel to the blockbuster hit Race ,follows Ranvir's latest plan for revenge.

None of the actors are of any good.The only thing Saif Ali Khan does is give out his "know it all" stare.John Abraham proves once again that he has no other talents than modelling.His only contributions to the movie are his various shirtless scenes.As a villain he is a big time fail.Anil Kapoor is another wasted talent.He and Amisha Patel dish out various fruit related (im not kidding,all their dialogues are fruit related!) puns.Although both Deepika and Jacq have some story related role ,they only score on the skin show department.

Its easy to mistake the story for being written by an 8 year old who probably ate too much chocolate.Within 5 minutes from the start ,it starts getting beyond the realm of ridiculousness.Its so bad that i wanted to 'facepalm' myself permanently for watching the idiocity that unfolded onscreen.Cheating poker ,speed based bomb, escaping from planes ,stealing historical items ,the list goes on,its all so idiotic that it starts getting hilarious in the second half.One of the best qualities of the first movie were its twists.With Race 2 ,the twists and turns can be seen a mile away.Its all too obvious and predictable.Almost all of them are shamelessly recycled from Hollywood.

This movie is an insult to the human senses.Abbas-Mastan have either gone nuts or are just trying to make quick cash with their worthless movies.They fill the movie with stylish shots trying hard to cover up the dumb story.Even here they fail.The visual effects are very poor and seem to be a decade old technology.The overdose of stylish sequences drag the movie even more.

The action sequences are too long and the comedy is very poor.The fruit related jokes are the most utterly lamest things ive ever heard in an action movie.Why fruits? Was it to support the cherry popping jokes? Theres no other reason for fruit comedy in Race 2!!

The only plus point that can be salvaged from Race 2 is its music.The music videos were interesting and helped to increase the movies tempo.

Overall Race 2 is one of the worst movies ive seen in 2013.Stay away from it.The music videos can be seen on Youtube for free.

A group of con artists plan to make their final heist.

The acting from the main actors are excellent.Akshay Kumar gives a very balanced act in the movie.Just like in OMG ,he gives his supporting actors enough room to shine ,while charming his way through the movie.Anupam Kher is as always brilliant.Hes at ease and his switches from the meek character to the authoritative figure is awesome.Manoj Bajpai steals the show plenty of times with his well drawn up character.Jimmy Shergil gives a good role as well.The only real disappointment was Kajal Agarwal ,who seems an unnecessary addition to the movie.

The story for S26 is sharp enough for a smart heist movie.The first half is smooth but the second becomes partially predictable and the end ,does open up a couple plot holes.But for a Bollywood movie ,this is more than enough for a fresh watch.

All characters are well drawn up and their personalities are nicely highlighted.The dialogues are another major plus point.The only bump was Kajal's character which seems to have been forcibly pushed into the story for the want of a heroine.

Direction is excellent.Neeraj Pandey presents the movie in a completely unique style that gives the subject of the movie more prominence.It successfully brings the viewer into the 80's time period.Although the movie is presented in as dramatic way as possible ,theres enough comedy to keep all entertained.The lack of silly gags make the comedy even more appreciable.The pacing of the movie was steady ,but the inclusion of unnecessary songs slowed the movie at times.

Overall ,Special 26 is definitely worth a watch.Its entertaining and enjoyable.

Jolly LLB [HIT]

Jolly LLB made Rs.12.5cr on its weekend debut.The comedy movie powered by Arshad & Boman pleased the critics as well as audiences as it trumped the other 2 releases.The critics were very pleased with the movie and majority say its a hilarious film.

The movie is about 2 lawyers and the judiciary system of India.

3G [FLOP]

On the other hand ,audiences trashed horror movie 3G.The movie made barely Rs.4cr.Critics panned the movie at first sight itself.Its a bad start for Neil Nithin ,as its his second flop of 2013 ,after David.

3G is a horror movie that follows Neil's character after he buys a second hand mobile.

Mere Dad Ki Maruti [Average]

This movie too got burnt by Jolly ,making just Rs.4cr.MDKM is a comedy movie led by newcomers.Reviews have been above average but the crows didnt seem to be very interested in this movie.

The story is a common one ,boy loses dads car and the film is about his adventure finding it.Sounds very similar to some other movie ,but the movie is said to be ok.

#1-Oz stuck on to its spot spot on its second week making $42million.The movie had a great week overseas as well.So far the total gross of the movie is $281million and is heading towards a big total.

#2-The Call made a surprise takeover as it beat its competitor Burt.The thriller starring Halle Berry made $17million.The low budget thriller (made at just $13million) wasnt expected to make such a good opening ,especially since it had late marketing and R rating.The movie didnt even please the critics.With a negative rating of just 40% ,it makes Call's success a even bigger achievement.

#3-The movie that was supposed to trump over The Call ,flopped heavily.The Incredible Burt Wonderstone barely made $10million ,which is a poor debut for a movie starring comic geniuses Jim Carrey & Steve Carrell.The movie has been getting poor reviews as well and is currently rated at 38%. Critics say Burt is just a one time watch.

#4-Jack the Giant Slayer ,is still holding up and trying to save some of its dignity but its all over for this one.The movie made a poor $6.2million ,bringing its worldwide total to $76million.Made at a budget of $195million ,Jack's failure is a BIG blow for its producers.Its turned out to be even a bigger failure than last years John Carter.

#5-Enjoying itself at the box office ,Identity Thief made $4.5million bringing its worldwide tally to $125million.Identity turned out to be a surprise hit like last years Ted.

This week theres a heavy inflow of movies ,but all are below average considering early reviews.But still ,my pick of the Week is....

1-Admission.This is a comedy starring 2 brilliant comic stars ,Tina Fey & Paul Rudd.The story is about a romantic comedy about a college Admissions officer.Initial reviews have been average (50%) ,but being a fan of Tina & Paul ,Admissions ,is RJG's PICK OF THE WEEK.

2-Olympus Has Fallen has some solid stars such as Gerard Butler ,Aaron Eckhart & Morgan Freeman.The movie is an action packed political thriller about the White House being captured by terrorists.Theres not much reviews and the marketing hasnt been too strong.On top of all this Gerard Butler is having a very very poor run at the box office.His last 5-6 movies have flopped.I would recommend this movie for those who dont like comedy and just want to see some thriller action.

3-The Croods is an animated movie about a bunch of cavemen.Lead by Nicolas Cage (who is currently one of the fallen from grace stars) ,Croods has to be seen only after proper reviews are out.Initial reactions have been positive ,praising the animation but story is said to be dull.

Guardians of the Galaxy gets its Drax

And its going to be played by Dave Batista.If you are wondering what is Guardians of Galaxy , you can consider it as one of the prequels to Avengers 2 (more details on the movie ,at the bottom.)
Batista is a very popular WWE wrestler and is the longest-reigning World Heavyweight Champion in WWE history.How does that make him any good as Drax? I have no idea.
Drax the Destroyer should have got an actor not a wrestler.Unlike Rock ,Batista has appeared in just couple of movies and that too just as a one battle villain.This also gives us an idea of what the director has in plans for the movie.Like in the movie Thor ,Drax would form the background character who mumbles some lines and mostly gets attention when the fights starts.In my opinion ,this is a very poor choice for Drax.

GOG is about a team of superheroes who protect the galaxy.Led by Star Lord (Chriss Pratt) ,son of a human mother and an alien,hes a charming troublemaker who serves as an interplanetary policeman.GOG also consists of-
-Drax The Destroyer (Dave Batista),a superhero born when his human spirit was placed inside a powerful alien body.Drax's arch enemy is Thanos*
-Gamora is an alien warrior and adopted daughter of super villain,Thanos*.
-Rocket Raccoon ,is the guardian of a sector of outer space.Hes a master tactician and commander and he also happens to be a raccoon.
-Groot, is an alien tree ,that first appeared as a villain ,but later on became a member of GOG after SHIELD captured him.His powers include ,controlling trees and other such tree related stuff.

The movie is set for release on August 1, 2014.It will be directed by James Gunn ,who earlier made 2010's Super.

Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster Returns [Above Average]

This is the sequel to the 2011 movie Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster.Unlike most hindi sequels that turn up to be garbage compared to the original ,this sequel has not only kept its standard but has also made a good impact at the box office.While the original was a moderate success even with all the good reviews ,the sequel has overtaken the originals collection within its first weekend.SBAGR made Rs.12.75cr ,which is quite a healthy collection.
The movie has been getting very positive reviews with many praising its dialogues and its story.

#1- Oz The Great and Powerful made a powerful opening on its debut with $80million.This is definitely 2013's first real blockbuster (the last one was Hobbit in Dec 2012.)Directed by Sam Raimi and starring James Franco,Mila Kunis ,Oz is a prequel to the classic ,The Wizard of Oz. The reviews have been average though.Franco is being said to be a wrong choice ,and the visual looks go over the top some of the times.The movie has a rating of 61%.

The movie had a solid oversees debut as well with $70million.Oz's budget is $215million ,and it still has a lot of ground to cover.

#2-Jack The Giant Slayer had a steep fall as it slumped to #2 with just $10million.So far the movie has managed to make just $44million domestically and $22million overseas ,making a grand total of $66million.With a budget of $215million ,Jack The Giant Slayer is already 2013's biggest Flop.

#3-Identity Thief continued to make a solid stand.The movie made $6million in its 5th week.The movie is a surprise hit of 2012 ,making $118million from a budget of just $35million.

#4-Dead Man Down the second new release this week ,tanked at debut.Making just #5.3million ,the movie doesnt seem to be strong to keep a hold.The negative ratings did no help either.While the cast was praised ,the dull pace and unwanted twists made the movie look good outside but half baked inside.

#5-Snitch made $5million in its 3rd week.For a movie that was destined to flop badly ,Snitch has somehow floated long enough to make a decent gross of $31million ,solely on domestic market.The Rock magic still shines in 2013 i guess !

1-The Incredible Burt Wonderstone -This comedy stars Steve Carrell ,Steve Buscemi and the whacky as always ,Jim Carrey.The trio are amazing comedians and it will be a treat to watch them.The movie is about 2 magicians in Las Vegas ,who begin to face competition from a street magician (Jim Carrey).The current rating of the movie is not very good though.Its rated at 46% ! Still ,this is RJG's PICK OF THE WEEK!

2-The Call ,is a thriller-drama movie starring Halle Berry.The movie is about a 911 operator who gets a shocking call from an abducted girl.The movie seems to be good and i recommend this one if you dont like comedy ,or are in the mood for something good.No reviews have been posted so,The Call is still a mystery card.
