Trek falls short [May17-19]

Trek falls short
[May17-19]

#1-As expected Star Trek Into Darkness grabbed the top spot with $70million ,but this was way below expectations. The movie was expected to make atleast more than $100million.Star Trek is now in a bit of a muddle as it needs to score a powerful second week to keep from being an overall disappointment.Even though the movie had enough juice in it ,and was loved by the majority ,it was the tight competition that ate into Star Trek's collection.
The critics praised the movie for its amazing action sequences ,and the performances of the actors. The movie is currently rated at 87%.
Star Trek is doing a good job globally as well ,as it collected $80million from its debut. As of now ,the movie has made $164million from its budget of $190million.

#2- Iron Man 3 ,continued to fall in a consistent manner ,as it fell by 50% again to a 3rd weekend collection of $35million.The movie has been a roaring hit ,as it crossed the billion mark last week. With $337million from domestic ,and $736million from overseas ,IM3 has made a gross total of $1.073billion ,which ranks it at #9 in all time grossing list. Its next targets are last years Skyfall & TDKR ,and will most probably end its run at #7.

#3-The Great Gatsby too suffered a 50% fall ,as it made $23million.Gatsby is safely out of harms way ,as it has managed to collect its budget of $105million.Gatsby is a low grossing movie for both Leonardo as well as director ,Baz Luhrman. With bigger competition arriving this week ,Gatsby will soon shut down.

#4-Pain & Gain continued to scrape off the leftovers of the box office.Making $3million ,the action movie has so far made $46.5million solely from the domestic market.

#5-Croods made a surprise entry back into the Top 5 by trumping over 42.Croods made $2.75million ,for a overall collection of $550million ,which is the 2nd highest of 2013.

2013 Top 5
#5-A Good Day to Die Hard -$303million
#4-G.I. Joe: Retaliation -$358million
#3-Oz The Great and Powerful -$488million
#2-The Croods -$550million
#1-Iron Man 3 -$1.073 billion (#9 on all time grossing list)

This week we have more blockbusters lined up! And this time its going to be a face-off between two beloved franchises! Hangover & Fast Furious!

First my analysis from earlier this year:

Fast and Furious 6
story- Dom & Team is called upon to nab Letty's gang.
+ the original cast is back after the successful Fast Five.Action Scenes look amazing.
- Chances of repeating the success of Fast Five is a hard task to pull off.The synopsis doesnt sound too fresh.

The Hangover Part III
story-no wedding or bachelor party ,this time the guys go on a road trip to Tijuana.
+looks to be different this time.
- The second part was huge disappointment critically and theres no guarantee whether the third will be any good.the second ruined all the goodwill of the first part.

Which is the RJG PICK OF THE WEEK ? -----Its definitely Fast & Furious 6
Fast Furious is promising some kickass action scenes and some edge of the seat sequences. With a positive rating of 78% ,it seems FF6 is worth watching.

The Joes keep the box office ringing

The Joes keep the box office ringing
[Mar 29-31]

#1-G.I. Joe: Retaliation made a fantastic debut ,the movie made $41.2million ,which is certainly above expectations. The first part was heavily criticized and the sequel was postponed by around 8months to undergo 3D conversion.Even with such buzz kill the movie has managed to make a great start. With an overseas collection of $80million ,GI Joe 2 has safely recovered its $130million budget in its opening week itself.Starring Rock ,Channing Tatum & Bruce Willis ,GI Joe 2 has already become the 2nd hit of 2013 for these 3 actors.

Still GI Joe couldnt please the critics.Although most agree that it is a huge improvement over the rotten first part, the non stop action is said to have taken a toll on the viewers. As of now it has a rating of just 29%.But considering the other 2 new releases have a rating of 13% and 12% ,GI Joe is relatively a fantastic movie.

#2-The animated hit ,Croods made a good stand ,making $26.5million which is just a 40% drop. The movie boosted by good reviews has already made $227million and recovered its $135million budget.

#3-Suprisingly Tyler Perry's Temptation: Confessions of a Marriage Counselor ,made it to 3rd spot with $22million.Directed by Tyler Perry ,this movie like the rest of his dismal filmography was panned universally. The movie has just a 13% ,with majority of critics blasting it in every department.

#4-The other big action movie ,Olympus Has Fallen got a blow from GI Joe's debut. It made $14million to bring its domestic total to $54million.Even though the movie seems to be slowing down it will recover its budget of $70million eventually.

#5-Wizard of Oz continued its downward fall ,making just $11.6million on its 4th week. The movie is so far the highest grossing movie of 2013 ,with a worldwide collections of $412million.

Now this brings us to the 3rd new release,The Host. The movie tanked at the box office barely making $11million.Based on the novel written by Twilight author Stephanie Meyer,Host was heavily bashed by the critics as well. The movie that deals with some sort of alien invasion with a twilight-like love triangle in between ,it just scored 12% ,and seems to be even worse than the Twilight series.
The Host ,is now the second movie, after Beautiful Creatures, based on teenage-romance novels to crash land this badly.

This week we have a 2 different types of classics. One is a remake while the other has been converted into IMAX 3D for its 20th anniversary. My pick of the week is....

1-Evil Dead-Remake of the 1981 movie ,which launched Sam Raimi's (Spiderman 1-3) career ,Evil Dead 2013 ,is directed by newbie Fede Alvarez under the guidance of Sam.The movie has been hyping itself up saying its the most terrifying movie ,and with an initial rating of 79% ,it seems it might not bad.Critics say its definitely excellent and a worthy remake of Evil Dead.

2-Jurassic Park -Dont get me wrong, i LOVE Jurassic Park and have watched it nearly a hundred times. But i would like to see a new movie this time and then watch Jurassic Park! Released first in 1993 ,this 3D conversion is to mark this classics 20th anniversary. The promos have been doing great work and i have my fingers crossed for Jurassic Park to cross the billion dollar mark (its currently $85million away) !

Croods & Olympus rules the Box Office

Croods & Olympus rules the Box Office
[Mar 22-24]

#1- Croods ,the first big animated movie of 2013 (ignoring Escape from Planet Earth) ,made an excellent start with $44million.Voiced by a strong cast including Nicolas Cage ,Emma Stone and Ryan Reynolds ,The Croods was accepted by the large family crowd.Directed by Chris Sanders ,who earlier directed the blockbuster How to Train Your Dragon ,Croods is about a caveman and his family as they set upon a road trip.
The reviews have been slightly above average.Rated at 64% ,critics say that although the animation and story will keep the kids and family entertained ,the movie itself doesnt rise up to any standards.
Croods is a big hit overseas as well and so far made $107million worldwide from a budget of $135million.

#2-Action flick ,Olympus Has Fallen made $30million ,surviving the jinx that seemed to be holding down all the action movies this year (Other than Die Hard 5's 24million opening ,all other movies flopped ,scoring less than 10million). Starring a powerful set of actors such as Morgan Freeman ,Gerard Butler & Aaron Eckhart ,the movie is about a terrorist takeover of the White House.
Reviews have been mixed though.Rated at 51% , critics say that while the story is cliched and predictable ,the direction and Gerard's acting is worth the ticket.

#3-Oz gave up its 2 week reign ,falling to #3 with $22million.The visual effects laden movie has made $356million worldwide and has already set rumours for a sequel with the original cast.

#4-The Call fell sharply as it made $8.7million.Halle Berry's thriller has so far made $30million.Its not expected to go past the $50million mark.

#5-The third new release Admission had a poor start ,making just $6.4million.With a budget of $13million ,Admission will reclaim its budget but will have to make a strong hold if it wants to make a decent total. The movie didnt manage to impress the critics either.Rated at 44% ,the general consensus is that while Tina & Paul are excellent ,the story is a disappointment.

Another new release which has been released in limited theaters was Spring Breakers.Starring former child artists such as Selena Gomez and Vanessa Hudgens the movie made a good collection of $5million.For a movie that was made at a budget of $2million ,this is quite a strong collection ,especially from such a limited number of screens.Reviews have been positive ,and rated at 70% ,critics say that James Franco is brilliant and the social topics picked by the movie is highly relevant.

This week we have 2 polar opposites. One is a hardcore boys movie and on the other we have a movie based on Twilight author Stephenie Meyer's hit novel.
But my pick will be.....

1- GI JOE Retaliation. The sequel to 2009's GI Joe ,this one brings back some of the original cast and adds a major crowd pleaser, Dwayne Rock.Rock is on a golden run with every movie franchise he touches turning to gold.So theres some hope on this GI Joe.The movie is directed by Jon Chu who earlier directed Step Up 2 & 3.

2-The Host doesnt look too good. Its only hope is its legion of fans mainly made up of Twilight crazies. The movie is about a force that take over the human bodies, kind of like an alien takeover. If you are a guy ,stay away from this one!

3-The third release is a waste movie made by one of the worst directors ,Tyler Perry. The movie is called -Tyler Perry's Temptation:Confessions of a Marriage Counselor. Please skip this at all costs!
