Superbad (2007)

[one of the best tales of growing up]

Superbad (2007)
IMDB- 7.7
Rottentomatoes- 88%
RJG Rating- 95

Seth & Evan ,best friends since childhood ,get a chance to have a great party before they move to separate colleges.

Starring- Jonah Hill,Micheal Cera
Director- Greg Mottola

Superbad is a movie about friendship and high school life.Just as its name ,its super bad (in a positive aspect) in terms of its jokes and situations.

All the actors have done a great job. They all hold a particular charm and take forward the movie without lose of pace.Micheal Cera & Jonah Hill are the lead actors, and they do an excellent job.Christoph Mintz as Fogell/McLovin ,Seth Rogen & Jon Hader as the two cops too give amazing supporting roles.

The story of Superbad takes place within a day,but its packed with humour and draws a neat picture of friendship.Coming from Judd Apatow ,you can be sure its not going to be a family movie. The jokes are the filthy types but they are all nicely blended into the plot.

Greg Mottola's direction is superb. The movie runs in a nice even pace and all the jokes are hilarious. It isnt over the top and lets the story and performances take the center stage. The theme of friendship tackled in Superbad might not be new ,but its the way its handled that makes the movie memorable.Even years later ,Superbad has set a standard for movies of this genre.

Overall,Superbad might not be for everyone ,but its a must watch movie.

The Pirates! Band of Misfits (2012)

[a lovable little movie]

The Pirates! Band of Misfits (2012)
IMDB- 6.8
Rottentomatoes- 86%
RJG Rating- 80

Captain Pirate sets out for an adventure in search of treasure that could fetch him his life long wish.

Starring- Hugh Grant,Martin Freeman,David Tennant
Director- Peter Lord

Pirates is a claymation movie created by the makers of the hit Wallace & Gromit.

Animation is excellent and is the perfect choice for the movie. But it could have set up on a larger scale for such an adventurous movie. The animation also felt a bit rough and not as smooth as expected.

The story is what can usually be expected from a claymation movie. Its a bit weird but manages to deliver loads of fun.The story wasnt as clever or outstanding but it was funny. The main highlight were the brilliant set of characters. The story has its own set of twists and turns that make PiratesBOM an enjoyable movie.

Peter Lord, has done a great job in building up this movie. Its pace is even and the movie doesnt falter much. The movie is fun and adventurous from start to finish.

Overall ,Pirates is be a welcome change from the usual type of animated movies released this year. And thanks to its great characters its great fun.

Batman & Robin (1997)

[one of the worst movies in superhero history]

Batman & Robin (1997)
IMDB- 3.6
Rottentomatoes- 12
RJG Rating- 10

Mr.Freeze & Poison Ivy join hands to destroy the city of Gotham. Can the superhero duo ,Batman & Robin stop them in time?

Starring- George Clooney,Chris O'Donnell,Arnold Schwarzenegger
Director- Joel Schumacher

Joel Schumacher returns to the directors chair for the 4th part of the Batman series.Due to conflicts with Val Kilmer ,George Clooney replaced Kilmer as Batman.

George Clooney as Batman is a miscast.Clooney takes the role for granted. As Bruce he fails to display the charm or the loneliness of the character and also fails to give Batman the gritty nature.Chris O Donnel as Robin is unbearable.Arnold as Mr.Freeze adds to the list of troubles. His one liners and wooden performance are horrible.Uma Thurman as Poison Ivy is even more worse than Arnold.

The story for Batman&Robin is just terrible. Its a sort of parody that just never ends. The dialogs are cheesy and over the top.It doesnt have a proper start and leads to a brainless plot and ends with even more mindnumbing stupidity.

Joel Schumacher displays his worst side with this movie. Its hard to believe that a person could take such a superhero to such a level of disgrace.Joel's mind is split as to whether he wants more of comedy or drama. So we have lame jokes as batman bidding with a "Batcard"(??!!) and boring scenes of Alfred on his deathbed.
Also Joel's style of direction takes Batman into a ridiculous low point.Nipples on the batsuit & closeups of butts is just annoying. On top of this we have ridiculous bat gadgets making sudden appearances ,reminding one of the outdated 60's Batman TV series.

There was an overload of characters in this movie. And very poor origin stories for them all.The character of Bat Girl wasnt even necessary and it just caused for a bunch of unwanted scenes. The action scenes were all very poor. And it was just too evident that the set pieces used were miniature toys.

Batman & Robin was a hit but was universally panned. The negative response for the movie was so strong that Warner Bros. put an end to the Batman series and stopped all future plans. It was so bad that even the director and the cast, later admitted that Batman & Robin was a mistake.

Overall ,Batman & Robin is a big waste of time. Its outdated and cliched and just plain ridiculous.

Short news on 300 ,Wreck It Ralph ,Entourage , Independence Day and more

Short news from the entertainment world.Today some news on 300 ,Entourage ,Independence Day and more !!

1-The Master ,Paul Thomas Anderson's latest directorial venture has been getting excellent early reviews.Boasting of excellent performances and great direction ,The Master is set for some Oscar attention.

2-Ronald Emmerich's blockbuster hit Independence Day has finally got its sequel ,or to be
exact ,"sequels".Yep,Independence Day will be a trilogy soon.
The 2 new parts will be called -Independence Day Forever:Part 1 and Independence Day Forever:Part 2.Both new parts will be converted into 3D.Unfortunately,its being said that Will Smith wont reprise his role in the movie.I was not very impressed with ID ,and so im not very excited for the sequels either.

3-The gory ,superhit ,300 is getting a prequel, and its called - 300: Rise Of An Empire. The movie will star Eva Green, Rodrigo Santoro, Sullivan Stapleton and Andrew Tiernan.
The story will be set before the events of 300 ,and is based on the Battle of Artemisium. In this naval battle ,various Greece tribes unite to stop the Persian invasion.Rodrigo will return to play Xerxes, while Sullivan will play the main lead as Themistocles.
Zack Snyder will be producing ,while Noam Murro directs. The story is written by Frank Miller (writer of acclaimed comics such as 300,The Dark Knight Returns,Sin City).
The movie is set for release on August 2 2013.

4-Doug Ellin ,creator of the hit TV show Entourage has said the script for the Entourage movie is almost finished. The TV series that followed the lives of Vinny(an upcoming actor) ,his friends and his agent (Ari Gold) ran for 8 seasons and ending on 2011.While the movie was inevitable ,not much news on its developments have reached the fans.
Doug has said the movie will feature all the lead characters and would be taking place 6 months after the events of the Season 8 finale.

5-Guillermo Del Toro's (Hellboy , Pan's Labyrinth) next project ,Pacific Rim will be undergoing 3D conversion.Unfortunately this is directly against what the visionary director wanted.Del Toro had said previously that Pacific Rim wasnt suited for 3D.But it seems that Warner Bros will be going against his wishes with the 3D conversion.

Batman Forever (1995)

[an unwanted trip to the 60's]

Batman Forever (1995)
IMDB- 5.4
Rottentomatoes- 42
RJG Rating- 40

Two Face teams up with a crazy scientist by the name of Riddler to bring a reign of terror across Gotham. Can Batman save Gotham by himself?

Starring- Val Kilmer ,Nicole Kidman ,Jim Carrey ,Tommy Lee
Director- Joel Schumacher

Forever continues the tale of Batman from the events of Returns. After Returns failed to stand up to the studios expectation at the box office (the movie was a critical hit),and of complains that the movie was too dark and gritty ,Warner Bros. replaced Tim Burton with Joel Schumacher as director.Micheal Keaton refused to return without Burton, thus being replaced by Val Kilmer.

Val Kilmer as Bruce Wayne was great. He brings a certain charm to the role of Bruce Wayne.Even as Batman ,Kilmer is a good replacement for Micheal Keaton. But Kilmer is the only good actor among the main cast.Tommy Lee Jones as Two Face/Harvey Dent is awful. His take on the villain ,is a cheap imitation of the Joker. He certainly does no justice to the role.Jim Carrey as the Riddler was a perfect match. But the Riddler has no personality in the movie ,and thus it becomes another Carrey themed role (ex:Mask,Ace Ventura, any Carrey movie).Nicole Kidman stars as Bruce's love interest but her role is even more useless than that of _ as Vicky Vale in Batman 1989.Her role is just to look pretty and that ,Nicole has done remarkably well.Chris O Donnel as Dick/Robin is irritating.

The story takes a sharp u-turn from Burton's movies. It reminds one of the stories that used to take place in the 1960's Batman TV show. Its silly and cliched. The While the previous movies gave the development of villains an equal priority to that of Batman ,Forever makes no such attempt.Even the villainous idea of stealing the brain waves of people (??!!) seem so childish.

Joel Schumacher's direction is below average. His take on the Batman series erases the hard work Burton put earlier. If compared to the story filled Returns ,Forever is completely kiddish. Also the over use of neon lights ruin the look of the movie. The intensity that was present is replaced with cheesy lines.

Overall, Forever brings Batman to the campy feel of the 60's.While kids may enjoy it,others wont.

[another failed attempt at found footage]

VHS (2012)
IMDB- 6.2
Rottentomatoes- 52%
RJG Rating- 25

A group of vandals break into a house to steal a tape. While doing so they come across 5 different tapes each telling a horrifying tale.

Starring- Calvin Reeder,Lane Hughes
Director- Adam Wingard , Glenn McQuaid

VHS is yet another found footage /first person shot horror movie.

The actors are all new and they are all average. No one stands out due to there short roles and forgettable nature of the movie.

The 6 stories (including the story of vandals) are not upto the mark. The first (3 friends with a girl they pick up at a club) ,is ok and not too frightening. The second (a couple taking a trip) is just too vague and not even a proper horror story. The third (friends taking a picnic in a forest) never really gets to the horror part. The fourth (a couple webcam chatting) has a great concept and set up ,but disappoints with its vague ending. The fifth (friends going for a party) is the only good one of the lot.It has a terribly boring start but the story gets up and running soon. But it too isnt very scary. The sixth (main story of the vandals) is entirely predictable from the start.

The main problem with VHS is that these 6 stories have no connection with each other ,other than being a bunch of found footage. All the stories will leave you with a "what actually even happened" question lingering in your head. Also when a new story begins ,all the intensity raised by the previous story will disappear and again we have to sit through a boring 5-10min introduction of the new story.

Direction is extremely poor.As previously said ,none of the stories make any sense nor are connected.Added to this ,90% of this movie isnt steady.Every 5 sec ,the camera shakes and has various zoom ins that just just confuse the audience even more as to what is happening.

Overall,as a horror movie ,it fails.Although some had a good concept ,the director just fails to utilize any of them.Give it a miss.
