Evil Dead (2013)

[cliched and least horrifying]

Evil Dead (2013)
IMDB- 6.8
RottenTomatoes- 63%
RJG Ratings- 45

5 teenagers visit a cabin in the middle of the woods ,where they find signs of witchcraft.

Starring- Jane Levy,Shiloh,Lou Taylor
Director- Fede Alvarez

Acting is below average. All are relatively new actors. They dont manage to bring the audience into the movie's worlds ,and neither are they very likeable. Its the usual set of cast that are present in most horror movie ,and they die in that order too.

The story for Evil Dead runs somewhat similar to the original 1981 movie. But just like the original ,this story is better suited to the 80's than the present.Almost every action of the characters are either dumb or have been done a million times in other horror movies. For ex:A satanic book ,found in a place where witchcraft has been practiced, has warnings saying not to be read.So what does the nerd guy of the group does?He takes an extra effort to write them down and read it out loud.
The writers havnt even thought of updating the script thats so outdated.Last years "Cabin in the Woods" was excellent because they did something new.

Another flaw is the lack of humour. The original movie escaped cliches and ridiculousness mainly because there was humour backing it up.The new version takes itself too seriously and ends up being ridiculous.

The direction was ok.The movie doesnt drag too much but its a dull experience sitting through this movie. After boasting that "this movie is the most terrifying movie youll ever see" on all their ads ,i expected some good horror.Unfortunately horror factor is pretty low.The scares are the same old gimmicks and arent too creative. Its really surprising on how poor its horror was.Aside from 2 or 3 quick flashes of torn faces ,Evil Dead can barely scare anyone. On the upside, the climax was good and gave the movie some redeeming factor ,but its too late to save the movie.

Like the original ,the movie has plenty of gore scenes.Cutting tongues in half, ripping off faces and more. But for some reason it doesnt really scare you.

Overall Evil Dead is a very poor remake, and also a very poor horror movie.Give it a watch if you are into bloody horror movies ,if not skip it.

Oz the Great and Powerful (2013)

[one of the most the cheesiest and lamest movies of 2013]

Oz the Great and Powerful (2013)
IMDB- 6.8

Oscar ,a magician, is transported to the land of Oz ,where hes mistaken for a prophesied Wizard

Starring- James Franco,Mila Kunis,Michelle Williams,Rachel Weisz
Director- Sam Raimi

James Franco does an okay job.He gives his usual performance.Nothing great nor noteworthy ,just a walk through role.Mila Kunis gives one of her worst performances of her career. She was utterly lame in the first half and turned even worse in the second half.Be it the cheesy dialogues or the poor makeup ,or the irritating laugh ,Mila screwed this up.She was a wrong choice for this role.Rachel Weisz does a standard evil witch role ,and Michelle Williams does the cliched good queen role. There is no innovative ideas here. The chemistry is zero between James,Mila and Michelle.Zach Braff voicing the flying monkey was the only one worth watching.

The first 30min ,Oscars life in Kansas ,was good ,but what followed next was just plain rubbish. The story is so cliched and cheesy it gets unbearable after a point. It easy to notice that the story is made along the way to fit the background visual effects.Plotholes are numerous and the etire movie reminded me ,of the equally disastrous Alice in Wonderland. But even Alice had some logic within it.The characters for Oz is poorly drawn up.Especially Mila's role. The finale battle climax ,was again stupid and corny.Another irritating thing was how much they tried to make it kid friendly. If this movie was meant for kids below 8 ,well its excusable ,but otherwise its an insult to people who actually know what a story is.

Direction by Sam is poor.Other than the first 30min ,which was in black and white ,the rest was garbage. The entire movie was made with one objective....make a movie about a CGI filled world.Thats all.Very disappointed with Sam.Even for a kid friendly movie ,the movie uses plenty of scare tactics. As with usual Raimi movies ,its the "ugly face pops out of nowhere and screams" type. This was done just to show that this is still a 3D movie.

The visual effects were beautiful.Thats the only plus point for Oz.

Overall ,kids below 8 may enjoy the movie.Oz is a cheesy movie ,give it a miss.

Spider-Man (2002)

[a fun superhero movie]

Spider-Man (2002)
IMDB- 7.4
Rottentomatoes- 89
RJG Rating- 85

Peter Parker ,a teenager ,is bitten by a radioactive spider turning his life around.

Starring- Tobey Maguire,Kirsten Dunst,Willem Dafoe,James Franco
Director- Sam Raimi

Spiderman was one of the biggest and most anticipated movie of its time and rocketed its lead superhero to great heights.Directed by Sam Raimi (director of Evil Dead Trilogy) and starring Tobey Maguire it propelled both to super stardom.

Spiderman is played by Tobey Maguire.Even though he has done good work as Spiderman, he isnt the perfect choice for the web slinging superhero.Spiderman is known for being a smartass, and for delivering puns and catchy lines. And even though the movie does show Spiderman doing such stuff ,his alter ego (Peter Parker) is still the nerdy kid we saw prior to his change.Tobey doesnt let the audience believe even for a second that he could be the guy delivering the lines but instead only manages to convince that hes extremely a shy guy.
Willem Dafoe as Green Goblin does a great job.James Franco doesnt get enough time to properly let his character develop, while Kirsten Dunst also is ok as Mary Jane.

The Spiderman origin is one of the well known stories of all time. The writer (David Koepp) sticks to it and theres not many twists. The rest of the story is well maintained.

Sam Raimi, brings to Spiderman the fun level that mirrors the comics. Its campy and colourful but it doesnt go overboard and maintains a balance between fun & cheesy. The movie starts off slow ,but once Spidey hits the screen, its a fast paced action movie till the end.

The movie will relate more to teenagers ,but it manages to engage everyone. The visual effects on Spiderman are spot on and takes the audience on a breathtaking ride through the streets of New York.

On release Spiderman shattered single day collection records among many as it opened with $114million ,the biggest at that time.It was the highest grossing movie of 2002 in the US.At present ,it currently is at #31 in the all time charts ($821million) and #13 in the domestic charts ($404million) [as of 18/7/12]

Overall the movie is a crowd pleaser ,and extremely fun for all ages.A must watch.
