IronMan keeps Gatsby at bay

IronMan keeps Gatsby at bay
[May10-12]

#1-It was no surprise that IronMan 3 dominated on its second week at the box office. The superhero movie made $72million which is a 60% drop from its debut. But overall the movie is still flying very high! With $664million from overseas , Iron Man 3 is now at a  gross total of $949 million ,putting it in #21 in the highest grossing movie lists of all time. The movie will easily make it to the 1Billion club by this week.

#2-The Great Gatsby opened with $51million ,which was a bit under expectations ,but certainly a modest collection.Starring a powerful cast which includes the likes of Leonardo DiCaprio & Carey Mulligan ,this romantic drama is based on the famous novel of the same name written by Scott Fitzgerald.

But as i previously analyzed ,Gatsby couldnt score over the critics. The movie has been getting below average reviews ,and is currently rated at 47%.The critics praised Leonardo's performance and the visual splendor of the movie ,but what was missing was the soul ,which left the movie quite empty in its luxurious outer covering.

#3-Pain & Gain scrapped at the leftovers of the powerful openers ,as it made a meager $5million.The movie has so far has made an unimpressive $41million.

#4-Tyler Perry Presents Peeples opened 4th with just $4.8million.This newcomer had no hope in the first place opening against Gatsby ,and being a movie that has "Tyler Perry" stamped on it ,is assurance of crappyness. The movie was dismissed by the critics ,calling it a predictable and boring ,scoring just 38%.

#5-Baseball drama ,42 ,continued to be a sleeper hit ,as it made $4.6million on its 5th week. The movie has already made $84million from the domestic market itself.

2013 Top 5
#5-A Good Day to Die Hard -$303million
#4-G.I. Joe: Retaliation -$356million
#3-Oz The Great and Powerful -$487million
#2-The Croods -$533million
#1-Iron Man 3 -$949million

At the Top 5 ,IronMan3 is easily ruling the year with a commanding $949million.The only movie thats even powerful enough to take that down ,in my opinion is Hobbit Part 2 ,that too in December.Till then or maybe even after that ,IronMan 3 will be king of box office 2013!
Surprisingly Croods overtook Oz ,for the number 2 spot!

This week we have another potential blockbuster! Star Trek Into Darkness ,which is clearly one of the movies in my MUST SEE LIST!

First my analysis from earlier this year:
story- the crew of the Enterprise face an enemy that has risen from their own organization.
+ Sequel to the critical & blockbuster 2009 reboot ,Star Trek will cater to all sci-fi fans.Director Abrams is a huge favorite among scifi lovers, and he wont be likely to disappoint.
- Too much hype is bad too.If it fails to match upto the first part,it will be criticized heavily by the audience.

The movie has collected $31million from the overseas market and has a strong initial rating of 89%.The critics say its an amazing movie, especially Benedict's performance.Although it doesnt quite match up to its predecessor.

News from REC and 300

Aaaand we can safely knock out one movie out of the busy scheduled 2013.Its the anticipated 300 prequel -300: Rise of an Empire. The movie has been shifted off to March 7 2014.
Although the reason behind the shift hasnt been told yet ,it seems they did this mainly to avoid the busy competition and also since the original 300 had found success during the March period.

Poster & Teaser Trailer for REC 4: Apocalypse!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rP3avUpQYiY
For those of you arent familiar with the REC series ,its a movie about demonised zombies.I loved REC1 and its in my best horror movie lists ,REC2 was..disappointing ,and REC3 (which was a prequel) ,was downright garbage.REC4 ,takes us right back to the original events. The movie is set for 2014! Anyone interested in it?

IRONMAN 3 RIPS INTO 2013!!

IRONMAN 3 RIPS INTO 2013!!
[May3-5]

#1- It was expected to be big ,but no one ever thought it would end up being such a big movie! Opening with $175million in just 3 days ,IronMan3 registered the second biggest opening of all time in the domestic market. The movie has been doing terrific business overseas as well ,making $504million in the span of around 10 days. This puts the movie at a gross total of $680million from a budget of $200million!Following up last years blockbuster Avengers ,was no small task but the third installment in the IronMan series took up the mantle with ease.

With a Rottentomato rating of 79% ,the movie is trailing behind that of Avengers & Iron Man 1 (both at 93%).Even though Robert Downey Jr. once again stole the limelight with his amazing performance as the title character ,IronMan/Tony Stark ,critics ignored the rest of the movie in general.

With the arrival of IronMan ,no other movie could stand the tough competition.

#2-Pain & Gain fell by 60% as it made just $7.6million ,to make a total of $33million.With that Bay's movie has made its budget of 20million but its performance at the box office is considered to be poor.

#3-42 kept up with its remarkable run at the box office with a 4th weekend collection of $6.2million.The baseball drama has so far made $78million from the domestic market itself ,making it a silent hit.

#4-Oblivion crashed to number 4 from its last week stand of number 2, marking a heavy 67% drop.Oblivion made $5.7million on its 3rd week for a gross domestic total of $75million.Fortunately the overseas collection helped the movie cover its budget of $120million.So far Tom Cruise's scifi movie has made $222million.

#5-The Croods made $4.2million on its 7th week to continue its brilliant run at the boxoffice. The animated movie has made a gross total of $517million.

2013 Top 5
#5-A Good Day to Die Hard -$302.4million
#4-G.I. Joe: Retaliation -$355million
#3-The Croods -$517million
#2-Oz The Great and Powerful -$484.8million
#1-Iron Man 3 -$680.1million

As i told you before ,IronMan has brought the party time to 2013 ,and its back to back anticipated movies from now all the way to September!
This week ,we have Leonardo DiCaprio's The Great Gatsby !Based on the famous novel of the same name ,the movie is directed by Baz Luhrmann.Gatsby doesnt look strong enough to take down IronMan3 this week ,it will have to be satisfied with a #2 spot.
On my personal opinion ,im least bothered about Gatsby since the trailers and promos hint at one long and uninteresting melodrama.

Special Guest Review :Iron Man 3 -Arnab Goswami

IRON MAN 3 (2013)
AG Rating: 95

Tony Stark is struggling to cope with his experience in New York with Gods and Aliens. He is troubled by the question: does the man make the suit or the suit make the man??!!....Well, he is about to find out in....shall I say...'Mandarin' fashion!!..hehe...

Special note on Marvel Phase II:

This is the first film of Marvel Phase II, Phase I of which concluded with 2012's The Avengers. And it has started with a bang!! This very first film has turned out to be way better than any of the movies of Phase I!!

The Plot:

As Tony struggles with his anxiety attacks, he enters an (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder)^2 and tinkers and tankers day and night with his toys and his armors. Meanwhile, a ruthless terrorist who goes by the name 'The Mandarin' ravages America with his bombings which mysteriously leave no trace at all of the bomb parts anywhere near the blast radius. When his man Friday 'Happy Hogan' is critically injured in one such blast, he gets enraged and challenges the Mandarin to come and find him. And then, in one swift motion, Tony's Malibu mansion is attacked and completely destroyed with Iron Man disappearing into the deep waters along with the wreckage. Presumed dead by the world, he finds himself in Tennessee with a broken suit and pretty much nothing. With the help of a kid who appears to be a younger version of himself, he goes about finding the Mandarin. What he finds there however is that things are not always what they seem to be. He also finds that the demons of the past can come back to hunt you savagely. Will he find the Mandarin?? Will he able to become the Iron Man he was known to be?? and most importantly, will he able to answer the question that has been troubling him??!!

The Film

This surely is the BEST Marvel film to date and also Robert Downey Juniors finest performance as Iron Man/Tony Stark. He beautifully balances his act and shows us Iron Mans vulnerable side for the first time. The reason I have talked about his performance in the film section is because Iron Man is woefully incomplete without R. Downey Jr. The film is engrossing for almost all of the time unlike the Avengers which frankly had a quite boring first hour. Right from the beginning, the film sets the right tone and the opening shot is a perfect foreshadow of the events to be. Despite being the darkest Iron Man yet, not to mention the darkest marvel film, it is ironically the funniest marvel film yet. R Downey Jr. has a God-gifted Lingual dexterity and he uses it here with full aplomb. The film very beautifully takes us through the now familiar journey of a hero rising from the ashes( aka The Dark Knight Rises).

The plot

Though it is not flawless, the plot has been crafted by Shane Black and co with great care. It is intense at a lot of places, hilarious at lots of places, filled with blockbuster action at lots and actually sets the standard for future marvel films.

The direction

Shane Black rights all the wrongs of the second part and though it doesn't reach the refreshing originality of the first one(perhaps no future parts, if any, can), he still creates a film that, if it is the last one, looks like the perfect final film of the trilogy. While Jon Favreau is creditable with successfully launching the Iron Man universe, Shane Black successfully completes the trilogy(looks likely)

The Acting

Again, Downey is the soul of the film. Ben Kingsley is absolutely brilliant and so is Guy Pearce who I feel is a bit under-utilized. Gwyneth Paltrow and Rebecca Hall also deserve a special mention.
The crackling buddy chemistry between Downey and Don Cheadle. It was such a crackling chemistry and Don Cheadle is so good that there can actually be a standalone Iron Patriot film featuring him in a leading role!! So Don Cheadle also deserves a special mention.

The score

The score is surprisingly well crafted and it does manage to stick with you even after you have left the hall.

The AG Verdict

A surprisingly rare effort by Marvel with an epic ending. A thumbs up!!!

Biggies of MAY

7 BIGGIES OF MAY 2013

Iron-Man 3- MAY3
story-after the events of Avengers ,Iron man faces off against the Mandarin ,a terrorist ,whose influence is very powerful.
+ Its IronMan ,and who is not excited ?Robert Downey & cast returns ,although this movie will be directed by Shane Black ,instead of Jon Favreau (Iron Man 1&2)
- None so far.

The Great Gatsby- MAY10
story-Nick Carraway is intrigued by the lavish lifestyle of his neighbor Gatsby. But the more he looks ,the more secrets he uncover.
+ A solid cast lead by the amazing Leonardo DiCaprio ,Gatsby is a stylish movie based on the famous novel of the same name.
- If you are not a fan of director Baz Luhrmann's previous works, Australia,Moulin Rouge,Romeo Juliet ,you might not be very interested.Gatsby looks to be carrying plenty of melodrama.

Star Trek Into Darkness- MAY17
story- the crew of the Enterprise face an enemy that has risen from their own organization.

Fast and Furious 6- MAY24
story- Dom & Team is called upon to nab Letty's gang.
+ the original cast is back after the successful Fast Five.Action looks spectacular!
- Chances of repeating the success of Fast Five is a hard task to pull off.The synopsis doesnt sound too fresh.

The Hangover Part III- MAY24
story-no wedding or bachelor party ,this time the guys go on a road trip to Tijuana.
+ The trailers are promising a completely new story other than that of the first 2.
- The second part was huge disappointment critically and theres no guarantee whether the third will be any good.the second ruined all the goodwill of the first part.

Now You See Me- MAY 31
story- 4 magicians conduct a bank robbery using the audience members.
+ a good concept.Cast includes Jesse Eisenberg & Woody Harrelson and other A-Listers.
- director Louis Leterrier has a poor history in film making.Out of 5 ,only Incredible Hulk has been remotely good. And based on the trailers ,this could turn out to be a cliched ride.

After Earth-MAY 31
story-1000 years after the people have left Earth ,a father and son duo land on Earth after an accident.
+ Real life father & son ,Will & Jaden Smith act in this, and they have yet to disappoint. The visuals looks great too ,and the concept is strong.
- Director M Night Shyamalan has not made a good movie since 2002's Signs. After a series of flop movies ,hes now considered one of the worst directors. After Earth will suffer if badly if the movie disappoints even in the slightest.

Pain & Gain makes quiet debut ,while Iron Man 3 thunders overseas

Pain & Gain makes quiet debut ,while Iron Man 3 thunders overseas.
[Apr 26-28]

#1- Micheal Bay made his 9th #1 debut (out of his 10movies!) with his latest movie Pain & Gain. The dark comedy movie made $20million ,which is somewhat below expectations.Compared to the usual Bay movies ,P&G is a low budget movie made at a cost of $26million.It will easily recover its budget ,but with Iron Man's entry this week ,P&G will wrap its business with a much lower gross than expected.
Keeping with the Bay tradition ,P&G was another rotten entry to the director's filmography. You may call it The Rock's midas touch ,as critics have agreed that P&G is definitely one of Bay's best movies till date. The movie has got below average reviews of 47% ,with most critics saying although Bay tries to make it thought proving ,the movie ends up into another one of his action fiesta.

#2-Oblivion suffered a steep fall ,as it collected just $17million in its 2nd week. With a $120million budget ,this would have surely been the death of the movie ,but fortunately the overseas collection had the movie's back. With $134million coming solely from overseas ,Oblivion reached $198million.Collections will severely drop this week with IronMan's entry.

#3-The only movie managing to stay strong and surprise everybody was the baseball drama ,42.The movie made another $10million to bring its domestic total to $69million.

#4-Movie's with a large A-Grade cast always spells doom. This fact was proved once again ,by this weeks 2nd new release ,The Big Wedding.Starring Robert DeNiro,Robin Williams,Diane Keaton etc ,the movie flopped badly making just $7.5million.The movie was crucified by the critics ,and is currently rated with a horrible 06%.

#5-Out of all the movies ,Croods had the lowest fall.Making $6.6million ,the animated movie has already made a whooping $468million.

That brings us to RJG's PICK OF THE WEEK

1-No doubt its definitely IRONMAN3! Being a sequel to Avengers (Yes,Avengers not IronMan2.Avengers was like IronMan 2.5 ,lol!) ,IronMan 3 has a lot riding on it.But on the upside ,it will have no problem raking in the big bucks. The movie has got a one week early start over USA ,and what a performance the movie has made. Not only did it keep the critics happy with a 93% ,the movie made a solid $193million overseas collection in its first week ,which is a much bigger total than last years highest grossing movie Avengers! So IronMan 3 is definitely kept its eyes on an incredible ,$120+ million opening.

With IronMan 3 ,2013 will finally open up to the major biggies of 2013! May-August will be keep the theater counters buzzing! And after a very very dull start to 2013 ,the audience are definitely hungry for quality movies!

Tom rocks the box office with Oblivion

Tom rocks the box office with Oblivion
[April19-21]

#1-Oblivion opened as expected at the top spot with a decent collection of $38million.For an April movie this is a great start especially considering its a sci-fi movie too.

The movie had a strong start overseas ,in its second week overseas Oblivion has made $112million already.Oblivion has now safely recovered its $120million budget. The movie is a futuristic tale about a repairman who goes back to a desolated Earth.Critics have praised the visual effects and almost every other factor of the movie except its thin story.Directed by Joseph Kosinski ,Oblivion seems to have got the same reaction as to his earlier movie ,Tron 2 ,although Oblivion is clearly an improvement! The movie has been getting above average reviews and is currently at 59%.

#2-Baseball drama 42 had another excellent week as it held on despite tight competition from Oblivion.Dipping by just 30% ,the movie made $18million in its second week ,bringing its overall total to $54million.The movie has been getting plenty of positive reviews ,which seem to have helped it make a good stand at the box office.

#3-The Croods had yet another solid week ,making $9.5million.The animated movie has turned into a big superhit scoring a worldwide total of $427million.As of now ,it is the second highest grossing movie of 2013 ,trailing Oz by just $50million ,not bad for an animated movie!

#4-Scary Movie fell up 55% as it made $6.2million.Although it has just managed to recover its tiny $20million budget ,the 5th installment might most probably its last ,due to its poor performance.

#5-GI Joe 2 ,had a heavy fall this week ,as it tumbled down by 45% ,to make just $5.7million.But the movie has done its job ,and has collected a very satisfying amount of $322 million (3rd highest grossing movie of 2013).

The final BIG movie of April is action king Micheal Bay's Pain & Gain.Starring Rock & Wahlberg ,the story is about 2 bodybuilders who get caught up in a drug deal. This is Bay's first non-Transformers movie in almost 8 years (his last one was the flop ,The Island in 2005).Bay has yet to make a good movie in his career ,would Pain & Gain be the one? And considering The Rock has a midas touch that rotten franchises to gold (ex:GI Joe2 ,Fast5,Journey 2),could he turn around Bay's luck?
Whatever it is ,the trailers looked great ,and this is RJG's PICK OF THE WEEK

PS:Iron Man 3 has started releasing worldwide and will release on April 26 in India,UK,Greece ,Brazil,Korea and majority of the European countries. As for UAE & USA ,Iron Man will arrive only on May 3.

42 grabs the top spot ,Scary Movie Tanks

42 grabs the top spot ,Scary Movie Tanks
[Apr 12-14]

#1- Even though it faced competition from the silly Scary Movie franchise ,the baseball drama ,42 ,held its base and beat the latter by a wide margin.Making $27million ,it was an unexpected victory for the movie.
The certified fresh rating from the critics were another blessing for the movie which should help 42 to carry on in the box office. With a rating 76% ,the critics were unanimous in saying 42 was an inspirational sports movie. With a budget of $40million ,42 needs to stay strong for a couple more weeks to break even.

#2-After a 7 year break ,the Scary Movie series is back with its 5th installment ,and as predicted its bad...its really BAD.The movie opened to $14million which is the lowest opening of the series by a wide margin.Scary Movie 5 was universally panned by the critics ,who awarded it a 05%.Even though it was way below expectations,Scary Movie might recover (i hope not) its budget of $20million by the next week.

#3-The Croods held to their 3rd spot firmly with $13million.So far the animated movie has made $385million and has confirmed itself as the first superhit animated movie of 2013.

#4-GI Joe Retaliation had a standard fall ,as it sloped down to 4th spot with $10million.The movie is trailing behind its predecessor in its collection. So far it has made $270million from a budget of $130million.

#5-Evil Dead suffered the biggest fall of the top 10 ,as it dropped by 60% ,ending up in the 5th place with $9.4million.This is a bit of a disappointment after Evil Dead managed to make a good opening last week. But with a small budget of $17million and a worldwide collection of $51million ,the movie is safely out of harms way.

Meanwhile Jurassic Park 3D ,wasnt faraway from all the action. At 6th place, the movie made $8.8million ,bringing the 1993 classic to a worldwide total of $952million.

This week we have just one major release ,and its a BIG one.RJG's PICK OF THE WEEK IS

OBLIVION- Directed by Joseph Kosinski who earlier made Tron2 ,Oblivion is no less visually stunning. The trailers have painted a beautiful picture of the futuristic world the movie is set in.And add to this equation the superstar ,Tom Cruise ,and we have in our hands a guaranteed winner.Oblivion has already released in most parts of the globe and already made a strong overseas collection of $61million! Initial rating for Oblivion has been above positive ,with a rating of 65%. Critics say the visuals and Tom Cruise are the true pillars of the movie while the story is slightly disappointing.

Batman:Arkham Origins

Major News from the Game World! The third Batman:Arkham Game has been announced!

Although the news of a third game has been doing the rounds ,no real details had been released ,until now. The 3rd game will be called......Batman:Arkham Origins !

This is a good move especially with the shocking end of Arkham City (The second game of the series) .There were rumors of an Arkham World and all but hopefully Arkham Origins will be the right decision.

About the game ,Arkham Origins wont be about Batman's nor Arkham's origin. It is more of a setting for the future events that take place at Arkham Asylum. The entire story like those of its predecessors takes place entirely in one night. Its Christmas Eve and multiple assassins arrive at Gotham to assassinate the Dark Knight.Mobsters such as Black Mask & Penguin are also in on the hunt.

The game is boasting loads of new features and will finally let the player explore the main city of Gotham. The game is set for release on 25th October 2013.

As of now ,theres no news on whether Joker will be there.Paul Dini ,the writer of the first 2 Arkham Games wasnt chosen for this one ,raising questions on whether Origins could match upto the high standards set the first 2 games in storytelling.

Arkham Asylum & City took the gaming world for a ride with its gritty and engrossing tales of Batman and his arch nemesis Joker.Could Batman:Arkham Origins match it

Classic thrillers make a grand debut

Classic thrillers make a grand debut
[Apr5-7]

#1-Evil Dead ,made the top spot with a good collection of $25.7million.This is an excellent collection for the movie which was made from a small budget of $17million.Although it couldnt top Mama's debut ,for a horror movie ,that too a remake this collection is sufficient.
Evil Dead is the remake of Sam Raimi's 1981 movie ,which enjoys a cult reputation in todays times. The new Evil Dead is produced by Sam and according to reviews ,it stays very true to its predecessors roots. The reviews have been above average and has a rating of 64%. Majority agree that its a faithful remake/reboot but lacks some features such as the humour. Its horror and bloody tale was appreciated by all.

#2-GI Joe 2 made $20.8million in its second week.Although its still lagging behind its first part ,the box office performance of the sequel is quite strong.GI Joe 2 has made a strong $231million worldwide.

#3-The Croods continued its strong run with $20.6million in its 3rd week. The movie has a strong hold and has only slipped up by 20% ,which is a strong holdover for such a movie. With a worldwide total of $332million ,Croods can easily cross $500.

#4-Opening with $18.6million ,the dinosaur thriller ,Jurassic Park made a triumphant return to the box office. On its 20th anniversary since its release in 1993 ,this 3D version proved it still had the thrills to attract the crowds.Jurassic Park is now $64million from its Billion dollar mark. Can it make it?

#5-Olympus Has Fallen made $10million on its 3rd week.Even though the movie was expected to have a steep fall this week ,Olympus has somehow managed to hold on.So far the movie has made a domestic total of $71million ,which is just on par with its $70million budget. The movie hasnt made much of a mark on its overseas market as of now.

This week we have 2 new releases. And unfortunately both can only be checked out after reading reviews.

Scary Movie 5-The 5th installment of the Scary Movie series looks as lame as the previous ones. The main attraction seems to be the 2 out of job actors ,Charlie Sheen & Lindsay Lohan ,and both appear to be cameos.Theres nothing interesting in this movie other than being a series of parodies of recent horror movies. It might fool the audiences for a 5th time this week by topping the box office ,but i suggest you to stay away from it.

42 -Its a movie i havnt heard much about. Its a true baseball story that surrounds serious topics like prejudice in sports. The only recognizable actor is Harrison Ford.Wait for the reviews before watching this one.

Since theres nothing great to watch this week ,my pick of the week is Jurassic Park 3D.

Zoe in Guardians ?

Guardians of Galaxy gets its 3rd star. And this one is a bit more well known.

Zoe Saldana is in negotiations for the role of Gamora! After Chris Pratt got Star-Lord and Dave Bautista got Drax the Destroyer ,Zoe is being considered for the sole female lead of Gamora.

Zoe is not unfamiliar with playing galactic characters.Shes already played Neytiri in Avatar & Uhura in Star Trek (not to forget that shes reprising her roles in 2more Avatar sequels and also stars in the Star Trek sequel).Although it hasnt been confirmed from Zoe's side ,its almost a 70% chance that shes already hooked.

Gamora is a green skinned alien ,who is the adopted daughter of Thanos (the villain seen at the end of Avengers). But shes also part of the superhero group called the Guardians of the Galaxy which consist of Star Lord ,Drax ,Groot ,Rocket Raccoon. And according to the latest version of the comic book ,Iron Man will also join the group
